What a software engineer actually does

Hire by seniority — from junior to lead
Seniority changes what a person can own without hand-holding, and it moves the rate more than any framework does. Here is what each level takes off your plate, with an indicative all-in monthly figure.
Read the ladder as a question of how much ambiguity you can hand over. A junior needs the problem broken down for them; a tech lead breaks it down for others. Getting the level right is the single biggest lever on both cost and speed. Buy a senior for work a mid-level could do and you overpay; hand a junior a problem that needs a senior and you pay for it later in rework. Most teams we staff end up with a small mix — one senior or lead to hold the design, a couple of mid-levels to carry the build, and a junior where the work is well-defined and someone senior is already reviewing.

Why hire software engineers in India
The short version: it is where the smart money already is. The engineers you would hire here already run production systems for a big chunk of the Fortune 500, at a cost that frees up most of your budget. Here is the case in numbers, not adjectives.
The cost math, spelled out
A software developer in the US earns a median of $133,080 a year, per BLS figures, and Glassdoor's market average sits higher at $148,764. Senior engineers run $140,000 to $185,000 and up. An India senior on our books costs about $3,200 a month, near $38,400 a year, for the same work. That is not a rounding difference. Stack Overflow's 2025 data puts an engineering manager's median pay at $200,000 in the US against $52,000 in India, roughly four times the annual burn for the same role.
Scale it to a team and the gap gets hard to ignore. Offshoring development to India cuts fully-loaded cost 40 to 70 percent versus building in-house onshore. A blended five-person team here runs about $11,000 a month, or $132,000 a year. The same five people hired locally cost roughly $45,000 a month, near $540,000 a year. You keep close to three-quarters of the budget. A talent pool nothing else matches
India has between 4.3 and 5.8 million software developers, depending on whose count you trust, which is somewhere around 12 to 15 percent of every developer on earth. That pool is growing about 11.2 percent a year, double the US rate of 5.6 percent, and is on track to be the largest software-engineering market in the world by 2027. It refills every year with roughly 2.5 million STEM graduates, second only to China, and more than a million engineering graduates specifically. The tech sector here employs 5.8 million people and crossed $283 billion in revenue in FY25, with $224 billion of that exported. Practically, depth means you are not fighting over a handful of people who know your stack. Roles that sit open for weeks onshore get a real shortlist in days.
Quality that is already proven at scale
The worry with a low rate is always a quality ceiling. The evidence points the other way. 174 of the Fortune Global 500 run 390-plus Global Capability Centers in India, employing more than 950,000 engineers, and the country hosts over half of all such centers worldwide. Microsoft's India Development Center passed 20,000 engineers, its largest outside Redmond. JPMorgan Chase employs around 55,000 people here, its biggest technology hub anywhere outside the US. Walmart Global Tech runs AI pricing and supply-chain work out of Bengaluru and Chennai; Google, Amazon, SAP, and Mercedes all run engineering hubs on the ground. India also holds the world's highest concentration of CMMI Level 5 and ISO 27001 certified firms. The rate reflects cost of living, not a lower bar.
A time-zone overlap that works, and English by default
India runs on IST, UTC+5:30. Put an engineer on an 11 AM to 8 PM IST schedule and a US-Eastern team gets about 2.5 hours of live overlap every morning for standups, planning, and unblocking. With the UK it is closer to 4.5 hours, with the EU around five, and with Australia the working days overlap through the India afternoon. The hours outside that window are the follow-the-sun advantage: you write specs during your day, hand off in the evening, and the work is built and ready for review by your next morning. English is the medium of engineering education here and the working language of the whole IT industry, so standups, pull-request reviews, and docs happen in English without anyone thinking about it.
