What a QA engineer actually does

Running through a checklist is the easy part. What separates a QA engineer worth paying for from someone clicking buttons is judgment: knowing which ten test cases actually matter before a release, when a bug is a blocker versus a backlog item, and when manual coverage has to hand off to automation because the team cannot afford three days of regression every sprint.

Manual testing and automation are not competing choices

A lot of the bugs in a modern application live in the API layer, long before a designer's mockup gets involved.
