What a solution architect actually does

A solution architect decides how a system should be built before anyone writes the first line of it, and keeps that design coherent as the build runs into reality. They sit above any single feature or codebase — the job is to see how a new piece of work fits everything already running, where the risk sits, and which trade-off actually matters versus which one just feels important in the room.

Good architecture work rarely shows up as a deliverable you can point to. It shows up later, as the migration that did not need a rewrite six months in, or the integration that kept working when a third-party API changed its contract without warning. Here is the ground a solution architect covers on a normal engagement.

System and software design

Component boundaries, data models, and the patterns that hold a system together as three engineers become fifteen. This is the part most people picture when they hear "architect," and it is the foundation everything else stands on.

Cloud architecture

Choosing between AWS, Azure, and GCP services for a given workload, designing for cost as much as uptime, and setting the infrastructure patterns your DevOps team builds against day to day.

Integration design

Deciding how your CRM, payment provider, internal services, and any third-party API actually talk to each other — event buses, API contracts, and which system holds the source of truth for which piece of data.

Technology selection

Solution architect, software architect, or senior engineer — which do you need?

The titles blur together in most job postings, and companies use them differently enough that comparing two candidates by title alone will mislead you. What actually separates the roles is scope: how much of the system a person is expected to own, and how many other teams their decisions touch.

In practice a strong solution architect can do software-architect work inside a single codebase too, and most of the people we place move between the two scopes depending on what the project needs that month. The useful exercise is not picking the exact title. It is naming how many systems and teams your problem touches, and telling us that — we match the person to the scope, not the label on their last business card.

The cost math, spelled out

A senior solution architect in the US commonly lands between the senior-engineer band and the engineering-manager band — figures that BLS-adjacent salary data and Stack Overflow's 2025 developer survey put at roughly $140,000 to $185,000 for senior engineers, and a median of $200,000 for engineering managers. Solution and enterprise architects, who carry cross-team scope on top of senior technical judgment, typically sit at or above that range: commonly cited at $150,000 to $210,000 or more a year in the US, depending on the size of the systems they own.

Why India has the deepest architecture bench

India has between 4.3 and 5.8 million software developers, somewhere around 12 to 15 percent of every developer on earth, growing about 11.2 percent a year against roughly 5.6 percent in the US. That is the pool architects get promoted out of, and it refills every year with about 2.5 million STEM graduates and more than a million engineering graduates specifically. A deep base of senior engineers is what produces a deep bench of architects — you cannot have one without the other, and few countries have both at this scale.

The seniority is not theoretical. 174 of the Fortune Global 500 run more than 390 Global Capability Centers in India, employing over 950,000 engineers, and more than half of all such centers worldwide sit in India. Microsoft's India Development Center has passed 20,000 engineers, its largest outside Redmond. JPMorgan Chase employs around 55,000 people in India, its biggest technology hub outside the US. Walmart Global Tech runs AI pricing and supply-chain architecture out of Bengaluru and Chennai, and Google, Amazon, and SAP all run engineering hubs on the ground here too. A time zone that keeps design reviews a real conversation

Architecture work leans on live conversation more than most engineering roles — a design review or a stakeholder walkthrough does not translate well into an async comment thread. India runs on IST, UTC+5:30.
