Clicking through the Azure Portal to spin up a resource is the easy part. What separates a senior Azure engineer from someone who passed AZ-104 last month is judgment: knowing which compute option actually fits a workload, when a security control belongs at the network layer versus the identity layer, and when a cost problem is a design problem wearing a billing alert.
Choosing where the workload runs
Azure gives you at least four reasonable ways to host an application, and a good engineer picks between them on purpose. App Service suits a straightforward web app or API that needs managed scaling without much operational overhead. AKS earns its complexity when you have multiple services, need fine-grained control over networking and scheduling, or already run Kubernetes elsewhere. Azure Functions fits event-driven work, a queue trigger, a scheduled job, a webhook, where you would rather pay for execution time than a running server. Container Apps sits between App Service and AKS for teams that want containers without owning a full cluster. Defaulting every project to AKS because it looks impressive on a resume is a mistake we screen out in the technical interview.
Infrastructure as code: Bicep, ARM, or Terraform
Manually clicking through the portal to build an environment does not survive a second engineer joining the project.
